Homework 1/20/08

By hillarh | January 20, 2008

As President of the National Honor Society my senior year I received the privilege of choosing a speaker for our school’s assembly.  Obviously there are many different people that I could choose from, doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers, accountants, automotive workers, priests, artists, and a variety of others.  With so many people to choose from, I had to set guidelines or criteria in order to narrow down my choices for the best school speaker.  Some of the criteria are much the same of what one could use for choosing a novel, such as credibility, tone, diction, engaging, clear thesis, strong main points, and unique topics. By using the criteria listed I was able to make the best choice for a speaker for the school. I ended up choosing a veteran from the town.  He fought in
Vietnam and was willing to talk to my peers.  He talked about how he had to leave his country and his dreams of going to get a college degree.  The veteran had a clear message which was to go to college and do what you love, his main points were strong as he described how we would have done anything to further his knowledge rather than watch friends die, he was a unique speaker who had appropriate diction for high school students and his tone allowed the audience to feel connected with his stories. It is important to have criteria for many different circumstances that can be used in real life.
