Homework 1/28/08

By hillarh | January 29, 2008

The artilces that I read are “Harry Potter and the Technology of Magic” by Elizabeth Teare and “Lest We Think the Revolution Is a Revolution: Images of Technology and the Nature of Change” by Cynthia L. Selfe. Although these articles are written three years apart, 1999-2002, both of them have similar connections between them as they both clearly agree on the same topic of the different uses on technology.  When looking closely at both of the articles, one can see how they describe the use of technology and how it affects the American culture in a variety of different ways.  Both articles are very strong as they effectively have their topic and hit on not only how technology in America is good but how it is bad as well.  One way that these authors can do this so successfully is by their wonderful use of examples and their clearly stated thesis statements. Selfe’s thesis is clearly stated and recognized by the reader because her word choices makes it easy to identify, which is, “This chapter will attempt to illustrate the ways in which change is modulated and complicated by forces of stasis by focusing attention on a series of images that come from commercial advertisements about technology” (785).  Teare has a clear thesis too as she says she, “will argue that the stories the books tell, as well as the stories we’re telling about them, enact both our fantasies and our fears of children’s literature and publishing in the context of the twenty-first  century commercial and technological culture” (801).  It is easy to see how, when synthesizing, these two articles clearly relate.

Homework 1/23/08

By hillarh | January 23, 2008

For my Essay 1 I plan on rereading it to see what I think needs to be changed.  I already know that I will be trying to strengthen the audience appeal as well as my word choices.  Also, doing peer review influenced me to strengthen my essay after reading Ke’ Lita’s essay because her conclusion was exceptional.  My writing so far consisted of reading the article and doing a lot of annotations, which helped me with my topics as well as examples.  It also consisted of critically thinking about what I wrote and finding good examples.  To strengthen my writing process I guess I could write it sooner so that I have more times to reread it and find changes and mistakes.  For me peer review is SOOOOOOO important to me not only in writing because I also use it in my art work where in classes and project I critique others as well as they critique me. This will also help me in my art field for the rest of my career.  By using this step of understanding and accepting other’s views, it will help me in my art field as well as my writings for English and also for my writings for all of my college classes. After college I am bound to do more writings and I will be able to strengthen them by what I learn in my English classes, also I will be able to assist my children and friends with their essays when needed.

Homework 1/20/08

By hillarh | January 20, 2008

As President of the National Honor Society my senior year I received the privilege of choosing a speaker for our school’s assembly.  Obviously there are many different people that I could choose from, doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers, accountants, automotive workers, priests, artists, and a variety of others.  With so many people to choose from, I had to set guidelines or criteria in order to narrow down my choices for the best school speaker.  Some of the criteria are much the same of what one could use for choosing a novel, such as credibility, tone, diction, engaging, clear thesis, strong main points, and unique topics. By using the criteria listed I was able to make the best choice for a speaker for the school. I ended up choosing a veteran from the town.  He fought in
Vietnam and was willing to talk to my peers.  He talked about how he had to leave his country and his dreams of going to get a college degree.  The veteran had a clear message which was to go to college and do what you love, his main points were strong as he described how we would have done anything to further his knowledge rather than watch friends die, he was a unique speaker who had appropriate diction for high school students and his tone allowed the audience to feel connected with his stories. It is important to have criteria for many different circumstances that can be used in real life.

Homework 1/16/08

By hillarh | January 16, 2008

The article “Harry Potter and the Technology of Magic” is an article written by Elizabeth Teare that analyzes J. K. Rowling’s book series, Harry Potter.  In the first part of this article Elizabeth Teare says that she, “will argue that the stories the books tell, as well as the stories we’re telling about them, enact both our fantasies and our fears of children’s literature and publishing in the context of the twenty-first  century commercial and technological culture.  Elizabeth Teare looks deeper into the text of Rowling’s novels and talks about how her novels relate to the twenty-first century concerning the commercial culture as well as the technologies consumed and how it forms the purchasing of children’s books.  Teare notes how Rowling’s fictional book can teach even children the significance of culture, such as Rowling’s aim toward twenty-first century culture.  One of the main points that Teare emphasizes is how in today’s society books are competing with technological entertainment such as video games and how Harry Potter became a societal phenomenon.  The second part of this argument has Teare arguing how Harry Potter books try to creatively solve the problem found in book and children culture which is consumer goods and media.  Here Teare chooses certain scenes from Harry Potter and picks out different themes from the book as well as different character representation, and one of the biggest aspects is that Teare finds parallels from our world and Harry Potter’s magical world.

Homework: 1/9/08

By hillarh | January 12, 2008

There are many things that I hope to learn and achieve this semester in English 112.  The first thing is that I hope to push my writings even further academically; which will benefit myself in that my writing techniques and writings as a whole will be more advanced than it was previous to English 112.  Also I hope to achieve in challenging myself as a student and a writer.  I expect myself to be an all around successful writer.  I will demand of myself to expand on my writing and to continue doing what is expected of me in class, which I hope will in turn help me to continue improving my writing abilities.  As always, I will expect myself to improve on the writing aspects that need improvement and to continue to excel on the writing skills that are already developed.  Some of my strong writing skills that I believe that I have are strong thesis, strong points, good support, and never-ending thoughts and ideas.  Different skills that I hope to continue to work on is to not write in circles, only in a clear, organized path, and to improve on my audience appeal, and to always be sure of correct punctuation and grammar.  Just as I expect from all of my instructors, I expect my English 112 instructor to always be understanding of my thought and work processes, to be willing to help me with the course when needed, to make the class fun and engaging by trying to help everyone enjoy the class because of the instructor’s love for the class.
